Martha Elizabeth Whitaker Bradford died, at 37 years, when her children were very young. Her mother Mary Emma Crowell Whitaker moved to Tallahassee from Ft. Mitchell, AL to care for the family. She had been a widow since 1860 and was 65 at this time. She lived to be 86, dying at St. Teresa Beach. Her body was returned to the Crowell Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL for burial.

BRADFORD.- Martha E. Bradford was the daughter of James A. and M. E. Whitaker, born April 13, 1848, in Oswichee, Russell county, Ala., the home of her childhood and young womanhood.
Her father, brother and two sisters preceeded her across the river. She was married March 8, 1876, to Robert F. Bradford, and since that time her home has been in Florida. They had four children, the youngest of whom is a tender, helpless baby; and the mother and father united in training these children aright. She was taken ill not long after little Robert's birth, in August of last year, and was confined to her bed till November. A Part of this time it was thought she would die, but God heard her prayers, and the prayers of her minister and friends and raised her up to come again to her childhood's home. Here she was so bright and cheerful, taking a lively interest in all that concerned her friends. In spite of love and watchful attention, she again took her bed, but she bore her great suffering with patience, taking the bitter cup as from a Father's hand. She had long been a member of the M. E. Church, and was devoted to it and its ministers, doing all she could for the cause of the Master. She had a triumphant entrance "through the gates into the city" January 23, 1885. She was conscious to the end, and talked and sang as only the Christian can. Her husband, her faithful mother and devoted sister and friends will miss her sadly. Her children cannot know the fullness of a mother's love, but God, who took her, knows what is best for us all, and we pray to have the spirit of Paul's friends, and to say as they in their sorrow: "The will of the Lord be done."
