Alfred Collins, 74, of Austin, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla.

He was born March 7, 1927, in Krypton, Ky., the son of Irven and Artie Feltner Collins. He retired in 1976 as an assembly line worker at the old Arvin Industries in Seymour. He lived in Jefferson County most of his life. He was a former fire chief and founding officer of the Deputy Fire Department in Deputy and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attended Main Street Church of God in Austin.

He is survived by three sons, Lonnie D. Collins and Ronnie G. Collins, both of Madison, and Melvin Collins of Indianapolis; one daughter, Wanda F. Dailey of Crothersville; five brothers, H.C. Collins, Brack Collins and Elson Collins, all of Deputy, Damon Collins of Massachusetts and Hank Collins of Columbus; five sisters, Susie Sipe of Deputy, Hazel Phillips of Madison, Bonnie Campbell of Scottsburg, Oma Smith of Tampa, Fla., and Gola Stacey of Oxford; three grandchildren; and a companion, Ruby Engle of Austin.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Main Street Church of God, with burial in the Collins Family Cemetery near Deputy.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. today and at the church after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Collins Family Cemetery Fund, in care of the funeral home.
