Samuel Futhey Dale was born in Lancaster, PA. In May, 1834, he went west to look after lands owned by his father in Venango and adjoining counties, and this led to his permanent settlement in Franklin. Among his early business ventures was a stagecoach line between Erie and Pittsburgh. He next engaged in the manufacture of pig iron and in operating a forge.

He took an active part in securing the completion of the Jamestown and Franklin railroad. He was also one of the promoters and directors of the Franklin and Oil Creek turnpike, of the Venango Water Company, and of the First National Bank of Franklin.
