Death of Miller Speed
Miller Speed 73, a long time resident of the Fontanelle community died early Saturday morning at the Greater Community hospital in Creston (Iowa) where he had been a patient for twelve days.
Funeral service were held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church conducted by the Rev. J. D. Stevens. Music was furnished by Mrs R. O. Bailey, Mrs Claude Sivadge, O. H. Hemphill and Claude Sivadge with Miss Betty Haines as accompanist. Selections were "Gathering Home". Life Railway to Heaven", " Nearer My God to Thee". Those serving as pall bearers were R. E. Jeffryes, E. G. Reynolds, Chas Sears, Marx Meisenheimer, Jakie Frank, Marinous Frank. Burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery near Prescott.
Relatives besides his children attending from a distance were Mr and Mrs George Lyon and sons Vernon and Arnold of Sidney. Mrs Della Penn of Omaha. Mrs Maud Smart. Miss Lona Smart. Miss Lois Smart Mrs Mary Schoonover. Mr and Mrs Leonard Smart. Mr and Mrs James Sanson and daughter. Same Speed. Donald Speed. W. M. Creighton all of Waterloo; Gaylord Speed of the U S Army; Mr and Mrs Max Smart of Chicago, Elmer Treanor of Ogden. Miller Speed, eldest son of Francis Marion and Mary Elizabeth Lyons Speed was born in Marion county, Iowa. May 29, 1869 and died in Creston hospital September 13, 1941 at age of 72 years 3 months and 15 days. On October II 1891 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ellen Creighton moving to Adair county in 1893. Five years later he moved to Adair county which has been his home since. Under the pastorate of Owens Smith he joined the M E church in Fontanelle in 1915.
He became ill two weeks ago and was taken to the Creston hospital where he was given excellent care. An operation was performed Friday from which he never rallied. Eleven children were horn to Mr and Mrs Speed four of whom died in infancy. The surviving are Halcey Brown, Mary Jane Griswold, Lucy Westphal, Carl Speed of this vicinity. Theodore Speed of Calumet. Maud Tuttle of Ogden and Ida Treanor of Lincoln Neb. also Orval Shaffer who made his home with them for 28 years.
He leaves two brothers and three sisters, Joe Speed of Cromwell. Sam Speed, Mrs Maude Smart and Rose Heifner of Waterloo and Mrs Eva Rafter of Fontanelle. His parents and one brother are deceased.
