The death of a John Mendenhall is recorded in Springfield Monthly Meeting, North Carolina, birth and death records as 1-26-1831. There is no parent or spouse information identifying this John Mendenahall as the son of Moses and Dinah Rudduck Mendenhall. However, the only other John Mendenhall that is listed in Springfield meeting records had left the meeting and was granted certificate to in 1804 to Miami Monthly Meeting, Ohio.

**********

John Mendenhall, son of Moses and Dinah (Rudduck) Mendenhall was born 2nd month, 22nd day, 1765 (his birth appearing in New Garden Monthly Meeting records, Guilford County, North Carolina. He married Martha Brattain on 11th month, 12th day 1800 – their marriage appearing in Springfield Monthly Meeting, North Carolina records. Martha Brittain was the daughter of Robert and Mary (Millikin) Brittain of Randolph County, North Carolina (Center Monthly Meeting). Martha Brittain Mendenhall's birth is recorded in Center Monthly Meeting birth and death records as 12th month, 10th day, 1775.

The children of John and Martha (Brittain) Mendenhall are recorded in the Springfield Monthly Meeting, North Carolina as follows:
Samuel b. 7-10-1802,
Josiah b. 10-16-1803, d. 1-23-1806,
Anna b. 6-5-1806,
Mary b. 5-21-1810.

On 9th month, 7th day, 1831 Martha and Mary were granted a certificate to "Hanners Creek Monthly Meeting, Union County, Indiana". Subsequent Quaker records in Indiana list Martha and Mary at the Silver Creek/Salem Monthly meeting, which is located near Hanna's Creek in Union County. Mary then appears in Milford Monthly Meeting. Both Martha and Mary then appear in White Lick Monthly Meeting with Samuel Mendenhall.

Martha Brittain Mendenhall is recorded as living with her son, Samuel Mendenhall, in the 1850 Guilford Township, Hendricks County, Indiana Census.

Please note that John Mendenhall (son of Moses and Dinah who died in North Carolina) who is entered in this memorial and Johnson Mendenhall (Memorial number 57019794, son of Obadiah and Rebecca Johnson Mendenhall) who died in childhood in Hendricks County, Indiana, are two different individuals.

Information previously posted in the Johnson Mendenhall memorial states: "Johnson (John) Mendenhall was born Feb 22, 1765 Guilford Co NC and died in Hendricks Co IN on Jan 26, 1831 he was mar. to Martha Brattain on Nov 12, 1800 in Guilford Co NC. (preceding information compliments of Findagrave Member Nola Martin)" - is incorrect information and ignores the fact of the existence of the child Johnson Mendenhall who was a member of the Plainfield Monthly Meeting, Hendricks County, Indiana, whose birth and death is recorded in that meeting's birth and death records as well as the burial book for the Sugar Grove Friends Burying Ground documenting his burial. Johnson Mendenhall was born on 9th Month, 3rd Day, 1838 and died 8th Month, 21st Day, 1852, at the age of 13 years, 11 months, 19 days.
