Military History:

Thomas enlisted as a Private in Company D, 49th Infantry Regiment Ohio on August 14, 1861. He participated in the battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862, Sennett's Hill May 28, 1862, the siege of Cornith, Mississippi, and then on to Battle Creek Tennessee. While in pursuit of Bragg to Louisville, Kentucky he deserted at Middletown, Kentucky on October 2, 1862. He subsequently enlisted as a Private in Company C, 10th Cavalry Regiment Ohio on November 22, 1862. He was apprehended at Murfreesboro, Tennesse in May 1863 and returned to the 49th on June 21, 1863. He was sentenced to one year imprisonment without pay at hard labor "with ball and chain attached to leg". His sentence was to have expired on June 15, 1864 but he escaped and rejoined his company on April 18, 1864. His commanding officer noted that he carried out his duties "commendably" having participated in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Creek, and the siege of Atlanta. To clear the air, he was officially returned to duty August 13, 1864 by Special Field Order 222 and discharged on September 5, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Thomas then enlisted as a substitute in Company C, 40th Infantry Regiment Indiana as a Private on November 5, 1864 listing his residence as Kokomo, Indiana. He mustered out November 15, 1865.
