Candace, my great-great-great grandmother, was born in 1853, the seventh of the ten children of John William and Nancy Klough Freeman Knight. The family was living in Alabama at the time, after several years in Tennessee. During her childhood the family moved back to Tennessee, and then settled permanently in Clay County, Arkansas. Candace's father was a blacksmith, but when the Civil War broke out he joined the battle. He was killed during the course of the war.

As a teenager, Candace lived with her older sister and brother-in-law, Cullen and Martha "Mattie" Mobley. She married Cullen's nephew, William "Billie" Province, on January 26, 1873. Together, they had eleven children: William, Arthur, Delia, Albert, Hardyman, Beaulah (my great-great-grandmother), Ruben, Judy Bell, Ruthie, Lela, and John. Four (Arthur, Delia, Ruthie, and Lela) died young.

Candace and Billie lived in Clay County for the rest of their lives, and were buried with his mother's family at the Mobley family cemetery.
