Willard married Weltha Gleason in 1862 and shortly after moved to Central City. He and his brother Henry Moore Teller formed a prominent law partnership in this area. They moved to Denver in 1878, and when Henry was appointed to the Presidential Cabinet in 1882, Willard partnered with Harper M. Orahood.
