David O. Gronen, 76, of rural Epworth, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services, after a courageous battle with lung disease.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque, and the Iowa National Guard Company A. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque, and the 40 & 8 Voiture 632 Dubuque County, as well as any member of Voiture 632, will meet in a body at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1925, the son of James W. and Blanche (Esshom) Gronen, and raised in Dubuque.

David has resided in rural Epworth since 1975.

He was very active in the Dubuque community in business, the military, and as a volunteer.

As a businessman, he owned B & G Automotive in Dubuque.

He served 21/2 years in the Army Infantry during World War II, where he fought in France, Germany and Austria and was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star.

Dave continued his military service as a volunteer for 35 years with Company A of the Iowa National Guard, where he led the Governor's Greys Drill team. He was past commander of the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque and an active past Chef-De-Gare and correspondent of 40 & 8 Voiture 632 Dubuque County.

He loved to travel throughout the United States and the world. Flower gardening and bird watching were other favorite hobbies.

His family was very important to him and his legacy.

Surviving are his children, Lynn (Mark) Donald, of Tampa, Fla., Clay (Penny) Gronen, of Dubuque, Scott (Laura) Gronen, of Dubuque, and Stacy (Randy) Barton, of rural Dubuque; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his former wife, Jeanne Weeber; and his very special friend, Helen Scheppele.

David was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John Gronen Sr.
