WESTPORT- Paul L. Hodgdon, a selectmen in this island community for nearly 40 years, died Tuesday at his home after a brief bout with cancer.Mr. Hodgdon, 62, lived on Route 144.
In his years as a selectman, Mr. Hodgdon was contested at the ballot box only twice. "He was doing a good job, and everybody was glad to let him do it," said Virginia Anderson, the town's tax collector and treasurer.
Because of his illiness, Mr. Hodgdon resigned his position as first selectman as of the March 23 town meeting. He had also served on most other town committees through the years, including the school board and the planning board.
"He was accommodating, good-hearted and an excellent bussinessman," said Herbert B. Cromwell Sr. who was second selectman with him for eight years. "He was just a generous man."
"He drove the school bus on the island when I was a kid," said former Road Commissioner Francis Cromwell. "He wired the firehouse, contributed his labor to the town hall. He'd fix the furnace at the town hall and not charge for it."
At March's town meeting, the crowd of 200 residents gave Mr. Hodgdon a more than 10 minute standing ovation for his years of servic. He was honored by the volunteer fire department as a founder and first fire chiefin the 1950's, and the fire station was dedicated in Mr. Hodgdon's honor.
"They did it at the start of the meeting because they didn't know how long he would be able to stay.. It was quite a surprise to him," said Anderson.
"All the town records and selectman's material have been kept right at his home," said his wife, Phyllis, town clerk for 29 years. She and her husband conducted town busuness out of the 13 - room family home.
"People would come over angry about something and Paul would get up from the supper table and discuss the issue with them and, by the time they were ready to leave, they felt better about their problem." said Mrs. Hodgdon.
Born in Porter, a son of Lester and Helena Higgins Hodgdon, he graduated from Dover (N.H.) High School in 1947. He moved to Westport Island and married the former Phyllis Colby on Dec. 4, 1948.
Mr Hodgdon owned and operated Paul L. Hodgdon and Sons Electrical contractors for many years. He started the business across the street from his home in the mid-1950's. His sons Paul K. and Dale M. will continue that business.
He was past master of the Lincoln Lodge of Masons in Wiscasset, and a member of the Bath Lodge of Elks and the Westport Community association.
