Born Jacob Buery. His parents were Daniel Buery and Charlotta Margaretha Zumbrunn. He immigrated to New York, 4 May 1866, with his wife, Marianna, and daughter, Sophia; and his brother-in-law, Frederic Wahl and his family; and Charles Greiner's family. He was a laborer in both Germany and New York, and a cooper for a short time. He lived with his family at 188 Ewen St (later Manhattan Ave).
