Vera Romans, 85July 4, 2001Funeral services for Vera Romans of Cumby were held Monday in the First Baptist Church of Cumby. Dan Newman officiated, with burial following in the Cumby Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Danley Wayne Newman III, Nicholas Ray Nicholson, Matthew David Shofner, Jonathan Michael Shofner, Darrell Alfred Newman and Alexander Todd Romans. Honorary pallbearers were Elisha Newman, Teresa Michelle Newman, Kristy De Anne Newman, Tyler Joseph Romans and Amy Lynne Newman. Cumby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.Romans was member of the First Baptist Church of Cumby for over 43 years. She was retired from Sulphur Springs Independent School District having been a bus driver for 20 years. She passed away at June 29, at her residence. Her greatest love was visiting the elderly in the nursing homes. Romans was born on Sept. 19, 1915, in Emory to Johnny and Emma Tucker Sanderson. She married Deck Romans on Oct. 12, 1929, in Cumby.Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeane and Dan Newman of Combine, Texas, and Ima L. and Thurman Walls of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, V.D. and Gwen Romans of Cumby; brother and sister-in-law, Malcom and Lorene Sanderson of Cumby; sister and brother-in-law, Eddie and Bob Martin of Athens; grandchildren, Lynne Shofner, Danley Newman Jr., David Newman, Deborah Lohrke, John Todd Romans, Kimberly Kay Kennedy, Keith Rice and Janet Cummins; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy and Ferrell Sanderson and two infant children.
