Henry Russell was born to John Russell and Jane Masters (Saraha) on 24 Jul 1820. He was the youngest child of 6 boys and 1 girl. His older brother was also named Henry but he passed away shortly after birth. His sister Sarah was very fond of him. When he was 7 years old his mother died. With a young family to take care of his father married again to Pheobe Leeson Cooper. She had a daughter Naomi. Missing his mother he became fond of her and in later years named one of his daughters after her.2 more children were added to the family. John was having a hard time to make enough money to cover the bare nessicates , so the custom at that time for children early in life to to get out and do menial jobs to help out the family. He got a job at the Rugby Boys school, shinning shoes and doing odd jobs. That turned out to be a blessing for him because it was there he met Elizabeth Walton. She worked at the home of the gentleman who was head master of the school.
