Inscription

In the entrance hall of the City-County Complex in Florence, South Carolina, is a plaque made of bronze listing the names of the 50 men who drew up the boundary lines for Florence County (established 1888). One of these men was John Wilson Coward.

Also, the little town of Coward, Florence County, South Carolina is named for him. When the railroads wanted to go through that part of the county Wilson Coward gave them the right-of-way through his lands and for this they named the town Coward, South Carolina.

In the book "Rise Up So Early" which is a history of Florence County, Wilson Coward is listed as one of 8 men appointed by the Governor of South Carolina to prepare the organization of Florence County and to arrange for the first election of County Officers.
