MRS HARRIET CLARY DEAD AT THE AGE OF 98
South Deerfield, Aug. 14 - Mrs Harriet A Bridges Clary, 98, widow of Edward Clary, died last night at the Bridges homestead, Pine Nook district, where she was brought in February from her home in New Salem. At the time of the flood on March 18, when it was feared the water would reach the Bridges home, Mrs Clary was carried nearly a mile through mud and water on a stretcher improvised from a couch hammock to a neighbor's home. Her brother, Maj. P. D. Bridges, 90, walked part of the way and was drawn the rest of the way on a wagon.
Mrs Clary was one of 19 children, a daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Harriet Hubbard Bridges, and was born at Deerfield, July 22, 1838. She married Edward Clary of Deerfield, who died in 1912. She taught school in Deerfield and after moving to New Salem she taught there. Among her treasures was a letter received on her 94th birthday from John D Roosevelt.
Of the 19 children there were 12 boys and seven girls. Two brothers Marcellus and Parcellus, were twins, Marcellus died several years ago. Maj. P.D. Bridges is the only brother living. Another brother, Gen. B. F. Bridges, was warden of state prison for 21 years. A fourth brother James B Bridges, was Sheriff of Franklin County.
Besides her brother Maj. Bridges, she is survived by a sister Mrs Mattie Ballou, 94, of Greenfield and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 at Woodlock's funeral home on Sugar Loaf street and burial will be in Pine Nook cemetery.
