Notes from M Boyd
have been digging for quite some time to find out anything I can on my great great great grandfather John Calvin Phipps, who was born in about 1838 in Grayson County, Virginia the son of John and Ruth Howell Phipps.
I have uncovered some information that hasn't been available anywhere on the web:

1. He was married 3 times.
His marriages to Mazie Dixon and Alsey Jane Hash Ward were known, however I found a 3rd marriage license at the Tazewell County courthouse. John married Catharine Burk on January 30, 1891 in Tazewell County.

2. I found a deed at the Buchanan County courthouse in Grundy dated December 23, 1893 where John sold farm equipment, all his household furniture, and several animals for one dollar "and other valuable consideration" to his son-in-law Alfred Ward.

3. The biggest question concerning John C. Phipps has finally been answered.
When, where and how did he die?
There has been speculation of this and that, however I did find the listing on the Tazewell County Death Register (1872 - 1896) for his death. John died at Big Creek, near Richlands, VA, on May 22, 1894 of cancer.
The informant was his son, my great great grandfather John McClure Phipps.
That book is available at the Tazewell Co., VA public library.

#3 Probably explains why he "gave away" most of his belongings to Alfred Ward for just a dollar.
His death was less than 5 months after the date of the deed.
It seems that he found out he was dying of cancer, as there was no hope for cancer patients in 1893.
It's highly likely that John and Catharine were living with the Wards since there's no record of any land being owned by John in Tazewell or Buchanan Counties.
He probably wanted to reward them for taking care of him in his last days.

I hope this answers some questions you may have had. Copies of these documents and other documents of interest are available on my web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~marcusboyd if you would like to see them.
