Daniel Watson Brown was the third son of George Brown and Susannah Green, both of whom lived in Fauquier, Virginia. He and his older brother, George Coleman Brown moved from Virginia in the late 1820s to Ohio, where in 1830, Daniel married Dorcas Martin, daughter of Peter Martin and Lydia Ramey. Daniel's brother, George, married Dorcas' younger sister, Eleanor, and both families moved to Fulton, Illinois in the 1860s.
