He married Mary Margaret Hanes in New York on January 18, 1849. They were the parents of Jennie, David, William, Helen, Ann, Catherine, Mary, Maria, Emma, and Ida.

"Ira Mereness, after a long and painful illness, departed this life, May 12th, at his home in Wisconsin, at the age of 89 years. He was born in Schoharie county, Aug. 23, 1820. He was the oldest of a family of seven children of whom two survive, John S. of Nashua, Iowa, and Mrs. Sarah Snyder of Cameron, Mo. January 18, 1842, he was married to Mary M. Hanes and to them ten children were born. In June, 1859, with his wife and six children, he set out to establish a home in the west. In the latter part of the year he settled on a farm on Big Foot Prairie, Wis., which has been his home for more than half a century. He was deeply attached to his home and much interested in the welfare of each member of his family ... He leaves to mourn his departure a widow, a brother and sister, one son, six daughters, many grandchildren and a host of friends. The funeral services were held Saturday.
