Countess de la Motte. A French aristocrat heavily embroiled in the scandal which became known as 'The Affair Of The Diamond Necklace,' later described by Napoleon as one of the three factors which brought down the Frence monarchy. During the Revolution, Jeanne and her husband escaped from the Bastille and made their way to England, where Jeanne wrote memoirs which scandalised Europe and added to Revolutionary fervour. One night when bailiffs knocked at her London home, Jeanne panicked - thinking they were French agents - and tried to escape by leaping from an upper window. She died later from injuries received in the fall, and was buried in an unmarked grave. She was portrayed by Hilary Swank in the 2002 movie "The Affair of the Necklace."
