I would like to add a few things my Aunt Marie told me about her father.
Her Mother was Katherine Oetken and her father was John Van Horn. She thought her father had a brother George who worked for the railroad and a brother Charlie. She said he was married before and had 2 daughters one was named Marguerite and that she lived with them until she was around 18. He was a horse and cattle farmer in Kansas. She said he got in to some sort of trouble and left town he either owed some one money or a gambling debt. He snucked back to town to see his youngest son and left again. Then her mother went to stay with a sister Anna Barnett, Anna was sick so she helped her take care of her 2 children Mamie and Nellie, Anna died and the 2 daughters went to live with a Aunt or G/parents in Oregon, later in life they met Nellie as she moved to Burlington. Aunt Marie thought Maggie married a man by the last name of Hubble. After Anna died Katherine got sick and she did not have any help so the Lutheran Church told her about a orphans home here in Muscatine Iowa that she could bring her children and she could work and the children would not be adopted out so she did that but she only lived about 4 months after coming to Muscatine. Aunt Marie was only 11 when her mother died but most of this has turned out true.
