He was born in Penn Township, Cumberland County, Penna. on 4 August 1882 the second child of Cyrus A. and Maria (Jacoby) Fickes. He grew to manhood on his father's Truck Farm.

24 October 1901 at the age of 20 years Clifford Fickes was married to Alma Bertha Palm, age 18 years, daughter of John and Alberta Palm of Walnut Bottom, Cumberland County, Penna., the bride and groom both being underage the grooms father, Cyrus and the bride's mother, Alberta both signed consent for the marriage, which took place in Leesburg, Cumberland County, Penna., by Rev. Ernest E. Weaver.

September 1918 Clifford Oscar Fickes registered for the World War I Draft in Cumberland County, Penna., he was 36 years of age and a self employed farmer with a family of eight children. No record has been found that he ever served in the military, but he may have as the next child was not born until 1920 and then the last child in 1923, sadly on 27 October 1924 his wife, Alma died.

Clifford married a 2nd time on 27 October 1929 to Miss Ellena M. Koser, age 44 years and employed as a saleslady, she was the daughter of Howard M. Koser and Martha E. McCrea of Newville, Cumberland County, Penna., the marriage taking place in Newville by Rev. C. Y. Love. This marriage ended the following November 1930 when Ellena died.

Six years later Clifford married a 3rd time on 1 January 1936 to Mary E. Mentzer, age 45, widow of Harry Cleaveland Mentzer and daughter of Arthur S. McIvor and Jerushia (Shoemaker), both deceased. The marriage taking place at Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Penna. by Rev. William H. Galbreath.

Four years later Clifford Oscar Fickes, in despair of loosing his farm and home at the age of 57 years, Clifford took his own life March 1940. Clifford, his parents and two of his wives and some of the children are resting in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville. No record has been found as to what became of his widow, Mary E. McIvor Fickes, who was the widow of Harry Cleaveland Mentzer. Her name and date of birth 1890 and death 1953 is on the gravestone with Harry and their infant daughter, Florance V. Mentzer, it is presumed that Mary is resting with them in the Prospect Hill Cemetery.
