Charles married Georgie Ann SMALL in 1894 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Three children were born to the union: Waymon (b. NOV 1894), Charles Maceo (b. JUN 1898), and Martha (b. AUG 1905). His son Waymon died in about 1903 from tuberculosis; fearing that his son Charles might also get TB, Charles arranged for son Charles to board elsewhere from the time he was a young child. His son Charles became a musician; his daughter Martha became a school teacher.

Charles' parents were Robert BISHOP and Sally Ann LINK. Charles' father (Mr. Bishop) was a white man; Charles' mother (Sally) was a former slave, herself the daughter of a white man. Charles' siblings were Jefferson, Boon, and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (who married the Rev. John Henry GRANT).

Charles' maternal grandparents were Enoch LINK, a slave owner in Bourbon County and Scott County, Kentucky, and an unknown slave woman. Charles' great-grandparents (through his grandfather Enoch Link) were John Jacob LINK and Elizabeth CREAGER.

NOTE: The name of Charles' father is from his obituary and from his brother Jefferson's death certificate. It should be noted that the death certificate for their brother Boon gave the father's name as "Been Bishop," rather than "Robert Bishop." At this time, a variety of factors indicate that the first name of their father was "Robert."
