James P. Cox was the son of Samuel and Charity Cox. He was born in Limestone County Alabama in 1843. He moved to Hempstead County Arkansas around 1860. He enlisted in Company G, 33rd Arkansas Infantry of the Confederate States Army on December 21st 1863 at Camp Bragg in Southwest Arkansas. He was listed as " Left sick on the march from Fort Bragg on Jan. 30th 1864" on his muster card. Nothing else is known about James. It is believed he died in 1864 and is buried in an unknown location. He is listed in Mt. Nebo cemetery where his family is buried.

Relatives believe he died of pneumonia in February, 1864 and is buried in Mt. Nebo Cemetery as the unknown soldier.
