She was the daughter of Mamas Hatchadourian and his wife Osanna, who shortened their last name to Hatch. She had moved to Philadelphia around 1911 and married Sarkis Balian in 1917. They lived at 716 N. 19th Street in Philadelphia. Shortly after however Esther became ill and in March 1918 she went to the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Sanatarium in York County, Pennsylvania to treat her pulmonary tuberculosis. Sadly she succumbed to it just 10 days later. Her birth year is listed as 1896 (age 22) on her grave, as 1895 (age 23) on the death record as listed here as well as the newspaper obituary, while another record gives her age at death as 26. She was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery but was removed in 1929 to Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill where her father had recently been buried.
