Wednesday Rites for Homesteader

Otto I. Hertsgaard, of the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, died in Havre Saturday, Jan. 27. He was 90. Funeral services will be Wed., Jan. 31, at 10 a.m., in the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

Born Sept. 25, 1882, in Kindred, N.D., Hertsgaard homesteaded north of Gildford in 1910. He married the former Mathilda Petrus in Havre, Jan. 18, 1911, and the couple later moved into Gildford where they operated the Hertsgaard General Store until 1940. Hertsgaard then went to work in the Great Northern Railway car department, and the couple moved to Havre. He continued with Great Northern until 1946, when he began work as a salesman for the Minnesota Woolen Mills. He retired in 1962 at the age of 80.

His wife preceded him in death in Sept. of 1962. Survivors include a son, James, of Havre; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Evelyn) Swartz of Big Sandy; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Clara Westby of Redwing, Minn., Mrs. Inger Rankin of Menlo Park, Calif., and Miss Selma Hertsgaard, also of Menlo Park; and two brothers, Carl of Mesa, Ariz., and Henry of Fargo, N.D. Two children preceded him in death.
