Maria (Mary) Lehanka Sukup was born May 4, 1820 in Altgramatin,Plzensky,Bohemia to Martin and Barbara (Draht) Lehanka. She was christened May 20,1820. She married Georg Soukup in Bohemia. Their sons Wenzel and Andrew came to America in 1870. Maria came over June 26, 1871 with her daughters, Margaretha and Barbara. Her husband Georg and son Johann stayed in Bohemia as Georg was not well enough to make the journey.

Maria filed a claim located on the middle branch of Verdigris Creek, Section 27, Jefferson Township. She died Feb. 9, 1901 in Walnut and is buried in St Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Verdigre.

Wenzel inherited his mothers homestead at her death, but as he already had a farm, he deeded the land to his son Frank, who sold it to his nephew, Leonard Sukup in 1945.

Note... Her married surname was Soukup, but she changed the spelling to Sukup when she came to America.

Georg Soukup died before 1880 since Maria is listed as Widowed on this census record.
