captain harmon harrison 'harry' b. litteral
was a son of hairston litteral
and catherine ramey.
harry served in
the carter county home guards,
the 22nd ky mtd. inf. usa,
and the ky 40th, in that order,
during the war of 1861.
his leadership was considered a key element
to the effectiveness of these units beyond their numbers,
capt. litteral led a deadly attack
on camp bumgardner in elliot county,
home of the hated 7th ky cav. csa;
later with his help
the 40th spearheaded the u.s. 2nd brigade
in pushing the line of gen. j.h. morgan back
470 miles across the cumberland gap!

he was married first to elizabeth ward
in 1856 in johnson county.
divorced 1867,
he married mallie w. davis franklin
in 1871 in ironton, ohio.
he had three children by each wife.
(possibly 4 with elizabeth)

harry was a mason.
he died of stomach cancer at home in 1881.

there is a headstone in mcGlone cemetery,
for harry litteral which gives no information
other than the name.
we thought it might be him but instead found
an 'r. litteral, captain, 40th kentucky mtd. inf.'
is interred at old grayson.
this is surely him, as there was no other captain litteral in the 40th mounted infantry, and his headstone manifest states it was shipped to grayson, carter, ky.
