Daniel's son David is quoted as saying his father was the seventh son (and therefore, third surviving child) born to Daniel Geiger Sr. and Hannah Lauffer. Daniel was born in Westmoreland County along with two older surviving brothers and four younger sisters.

In 1860 or 1861, Daniel married Mary Ann Kuhns and subsequently moved from Pennsylvania to Iowa. While the Kuhns family indicates they married during the summer of 1861, in 1877 Mary Ann testified they had been married 17 years.

In 1871 Daniel moved the family again, this time to Nebraska to live on a claim under the Homestead Act. He and Mary Ann divorced sometime around 1878. Daniel returned to Pennsylvania in the early 1880's, living in Braddock and working as a carpenter. In 1886 he married Joanna Gardner, separating and filing for divorce within a month.

During his final years, Daniel had a debilitating stroke and was taken in by his children. He died in the vicinity of Edinboro, PA where one or two of his sons were living. He was buried here and later his sons moved from the area.

At this time, Daniel is buried in an unmarked grave. It is unknown if a permanent grave marker was ever installed. It's possible that one could have been damaged and removed since there wasn't any family in the area to notify. The cemetery caretaker mentioned that the area of the cemetery where he is interred, was also where the indigent were buried. It's hard to say what, if anything, was ever used to mark his final resting place.

Daniel's grave is located at the rear of the cemetery in the last row, in front of some large hemlock trees. His grave is roughly in the center of that row. According to the cemetery plot map, the closest grave to him is Winton Davis who is located in the row ahead of him. I speculated where Daniel should be buried and it was here that I placed his temporary grave marker.

The date of birth shown on this memorial differs from his death certificate because it came from a marriage license, where presumably, he would have provided that information himself. The date of birth listed on his death certificate is August 17, 1836.
