James Emanuel Wilson Sr. was born about 1819 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, possibly near the town of Blacksburg. He was the son of Marcus "Mark" Wilson (1795-1871) and Susannah "Susan" Moore (1799-1886), both buried in the Pleasant Run Cemetery located in Pleasant Run, McCreary Co., Kentucky. James was the first of their thirteen known children.

James' father, Mark, was born in Montgomery Co., Virginia. He was the son of Virginia natives, Joshua Wilson II (1767-1835) and Sarah "Sally" Lykins (1767-1878). They married in Montgomery Co., VA on Dec. 2, 1792.

James' mother, Susan, was also a native of Montgomery Co., VA. She was daughter of Rev. Isaac Lewis Moore (1779-1853) and Sarah "Sally" Carico (1778-1858). Isaac was born in Maryland, Sarah in Virginia. Both died in Madison, Jefferson Co., Indiana.

About 1831-34, James, migrated as a young teenager with his parents and younger siblings from Virginia to Whitley Co., KY. There he eventually met Elizabeth Mahala "Hala" Strunk (abt 1821-1911) whom he married on Feb. 2, 1838. James was 19 when they married, Mahala 17. They were married for 24 years and had eight known children. Their known children are listed in her memorial.

James died at the age of 43 on Feb. 26, 1862 near Williamsburg in Whitley Co., KY from typhoid fever, acquired while serving as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was with Co. G in the Tennessee Infantry, 2nd Regiment. It is said that his wife drove a wagon by herself to the Williamsburg area to get the body of her husband and bring it back to Scott County, TN for burial in the family cemetery. James is buried in the Wilson Cemetery located in Pleasant Grove (near Winfield), Scott Co., TN. He has a Civil War military marker that was placed in August of 1888.

His son, James Emanuel "Manuel" Wilson Jr. (1842-1862), also a Union soldier, had died earlier in February from pneumonia at the age of 20. He died in Camp Carter, Carter Co., KY and is buried in Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Jessamine Co., KY. He too, has a military marker.

James' wife, Mahala , remarried in November of 1864, to John Rice (?- 1865). Also a Civil War soldier, their marriage was a short one (less that a year). He too, died from illness (chronic diarrhea) contracted while a soldier. James died in the Cumberland Hospital in Knoxville, Tn, and is buried in the Knoxville National Cemetery.

Mahala married a third time, to 54 year old Edward "Ned" Butler (abt 1815-bet 1880/1900). Because of his age it is thought to have been his second or third marriage. It is also thought that Ned's previous wife may have died from childbirth complications, giving birth to Marcus W. "Mark" Butler (1870-1957). It is not known when Ned died but he is buried in the Wilson Cemetery. His burial marker is just a flat stone with his name crudely carved on it .

Mahala died on Mar. 6, 1911 near Pleasant Grove, Scott Co., at the age of 90. She is buried in the Wilson Cemetery, near her first husband, James Emanuel Wilson. Being a widow (?) she is buried under her first husband's surname, Wilson. Her flat burial marker simply reads "Hala Wilson".
