John Manley Aarestad, 79, longtime McHenry resident died in peace January 12, 2010.

A viewing has been arranged for Sunday, January 17th from 1 pm-5 pm at the Quam Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home in Cooperstown, ND. A service honoring John's life is pending and will follow in early spring.

John Aarestad was born September 1, 1930 in McHenry, North Dakota, the son of the late John, Sr. and Marie Aarestad. He was raised and educated in McHenry and was owner and operator of the McHenry City Meat Market and Grocery for over four decades.

John was a lifelong dedicated member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, in McHenry where he enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years. A gifted self-taught musician, he played the organ, accordion, piano, guitar, mandolin and violin. He also loved restoring antiques, played baseball in his youth, fished, hunted and was a member of the McHenry Fire Department.

An avid historian, he enjoyed traveling throughout the upper Midwest researching historical sites, creating miniature replicas of buildings and communities, and reading our country's history.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and John Aarestad, Sr. and his three brothers Elton, Burton and Wesley.
