Birth records from Blooming Grove Township in Waseca County, Minnesota indicate that Adolph was born 'Sunder A. Johnson' on the 23rd of August, 1873 to Thomas and Mary Johnson. Adolph was the youngest of seven children born to his mother Maria (Kinn) before her death in 1875. His father would remarry in 1875 and have an additional 5 children, making Adolph the seventh of twelve known children born to his father.

Having lost his mother before his second birthday, Adolph would be raised by his step-mother Thorbjor Maria (Evenson) and paternal grandmother Taaraand, who lived with the family at the time of the 1875 Minnesota Census. Adolph's father Thomas had not yet taken a second wife at that time, but would later record that the second marriage took place in 1875.

The US Census of 1880 captures Adolph at the age of 7 in Blooming Grove Township, where he attended school that year. His grandmother 'Torond' was still living with the family at the age of 84 that year.

In 1885, Adolph was recorded at the age of 12 living at Blooming Grove with his family. His grandmother Taaraand was no longer with the family at this time. Unfortunately, all 1890 US Census records were destoyed by a fire.

In 1895, Adolph married Annie Jameson on May 27 at New Richland in Waseca County, MN. The newly-weds were also captured that year in the Minnesota State Census residing with Adolph's father in Blooming Grove. Both Annie and Adolph were 22 years of age.

The US Census of 1900 records Adolph and Anna renting a farm at Bath in Freeborn County, MN. Adolph declares his birth to have occurred in August of 1873 and Anna's in February of the same year. They had been married for 5 years, and Anna had given birth to three children, two of whom survived at that time. They had a 4 year-old son named Malin A. Johnson and another son named Joel T. Johnson. They had lost a 1 year-old daughter named Neta Sophie Johnson on May 29, 1900. Anna claims to have immigrated to America 20 years prior in 1880 from Norway. Both Adolph and Anna could speak, read, and write in English.

Around 1902, Adolph and Annie relocated their family to McLean County, North Dakota. The 1910 US Census records that Sander A. Johnson, at the age of 36, was farming his own land under mortgage there. A Land Patent for 160 acres near Turtle Lake, ND was filed under the name of Adolph T. Johnson in 1907. Anna claims to have emigrated from Norway in 1881. The couple had been married for fourteen years and now had seven children living with them, five of whom were attended school there.

A 1918 Registration Card for the First World War features Sander Adolph Johnson at the age of 45 working as a Thresher for a company called Chapman & Sperry at Turtle Lake in McLean County, ND. Adolph lists his wife Anna Johnson as his nearest relative. He is descibed by the registrar as tall and slender with blue eyes and dark hair.

The US Census of 1920 captures Adolph T. Johnson at the age of 46 living in a rented home at Turtle Lake, North Dakota. Living with him and his wife are eight children, all of whom attend school, with the exception of their youngest daughter who is only three years old. Adolph is working as a manager of a general merchandise store. Interestingly, Adolph says that he believes his mother was born somewhere in the United States, which is incorrect.

Anna and five of the children would be recorded living together at Duluth, MN in 1930, where Anna states she is neither widowed nor divorced, but 'married'. She would also be recorded in 1940 at Duluth, MN living with four of her adult children where she still described herself as 'married'.
