Gerald Edward Wakeland, 94, of the Coventry Apartments, Rock Island, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Trinity Rock Island.
In accordance with his wishes, his body will be cremated and no services will be held. Private inurnment of Mr. Wakeland's cremated remains will take place at Rock Island Memorial Park. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.
Gerald Edward was born on May 29, 1916, in Millersburg, Ill., the son of Walter A. and Mabel (Beauguess) Wakeland. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He married Frances Bailey on July 10, 1963, in Coal Valley. She preceded him in death on June 19, 1981.
Gerald graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island and later received his master's degree from National College in Evanston, Ill. He was a teacher and principal for 28 years at Grant and Eugene Field elementary schools in Rock Island. He was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge 658, and VFW Post 1303 and was a past president of the Rock Island Education Association.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Renie Wakeland; several nieces and nephews; and caring friends, Howard and Dorothy Bundy.
In addition to his wife, his sister, Irma, and brothers, Norman, Cliff, Everett, Kenny, and Bobby, and twin brothers, Warren and Loren, preceded him in death.
