He was the third child and the second boy born to William and Amy Malone Hester.
Seeking new opportunities and a better life for his family, William Hester and his 11 year old son Roling traveled from N. Carolina to Franklin Co. Alabama in 1818. They settled about 5 or 6 miles east of Russellville. They built a cabin, cleared land and planted a small crop. In the fall of 1818 they returned to N. Carolina by Ox cart. Gathering the family Buck had left behind they all returned to Franklin Co.
At the age of 21 John married Sarah Bowen on Dec. 24, 1831. It appears on the 1860 census that John and Sarah had 11 children. John died sometime between 1860 and 1870. He is not on the 1870 census.
