Evelyn Kaufman was born Evelyn Calof in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Aug. 20, 1913. The youngest of 11 sisters and brothers, she accompanied her parents to Los Angeles in 1930. There she proudly became a naturalized American citizen and, in 1935, married Al Kaufman.
Together, through 41 years of marriage, they raised three children while also providing emotional and financial support for their extended family. Evelyn cared deeply about people, had many good friends and stood by them without hesitation. She found great value in life and affirmed life's value for others.
In 1988 Evelyn was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. During the past 14 years, she and her family have continued to accept her life's challenges with the help, and sometimes in spite, of two surgeries and a regimen of arduous chemotherapy. Evelyn moved to Napa in 1997 to live with her son, Dan Kaufman, and daughter-in-law Marilyn Edstrom. Recently, Evelyn has resided at Napa's Concordia Manor, where, with the assistance of caring and dedicated staff, she has spent the past year and a half.
Evelyn's cherished memory, her compassion and her personal courage will be treasured by her son, Ron, and his wife, Eileen, in Santa Clarita; by daughter Jessica and her partner, Charles, in Santa Barbara; by Dan and Marilyn in Napa; by granddaughters Amy, Vanessa and Andrea; grandsons David and Matthew; great-granddaughters Sabrina and Peri; and by her devoted nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of Napa Valley, 3299 Claremont Way, Napa, CA 94558.
