He and Emma Donohue were married 3 September 1873. It appears that John and Emma were separated, but there is no known record for when they parted ways, nor have I yet found a divorce on record. They had four children between 1873 and 1880, the first born, who died as an infant, Margaret, and two others. Documentation shows Emma applied for Civil War widow's benefits against John's service in 1876, but it was deemed invalid and denied, probably because John was still living by that point. She reapplied in 1886, again as a widow, which was allowed, (though John was still living) and again in 1896, for a minor child. Interestingly, her second husband, Harrison Lovsey, is listed on that application as her minor child, though the 1880 census shows him living alone in York, Ohio. In the census from the same year, John is listed as a widower, despite the fact that Emma is still living, in Pleasant, Ohio, with his daughter Margaret Ethel, the oldest of their living children. It is unclear where the two children following Margaret were living at that point. Emma was totally off the grid for the 1880 census.
There are clear indications of a reconciliation and that John and Emma paired up again for a time, long enough to have at least 3 more children, Charles Henry (b. 1881), James Sylvester and Jesse (twins b. 1885). John died in 1887.
Records show that all of the children, except Margaret, were placed in the Athens County Chidren's Home by their own mother, due to poverty. The three elder children were placed 9 April 1888, the youngest were placed 29 July 1888. They were discharged to their mother's custody 31 May 1889. Evidently absent their father, she was unable to care for them.
Emma married Harrison Lovsey 23 December 1894. He came into the marriage with a 3 year old child, Harry G. Lovsey. Together they had two more children, Mildred Marie and John. Harrison died in 1899, Emma died in 1938.
