Our loving mother, and grandmother, Gladys Nay Whittaker was granted her angel wings on April 3, 2014 surrounded by the love of her family. Gladys was born on November 20, 1927 in Circleville, Utah to John Thomas and Erma Dalley Nay. She was raised in Circleville and Spry. She graduated from Panguitch High School.
Gladys married the love of her life, Arland Spencer "Bud" Whittaker on May 9, 1945. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. She is now reunited with her sweetheart after a separation of 24 years.
Gladys' hands were never idle. She devoted her life to her family, church and community. She always had a desire to leave things better than they were. The beauty of her yard won her a state beautification award.
She was the first woman to serve on the Milford City Council. She was instrumental in developing the historical park and the pavilion. During her time on the city council she was part of the committee to celebrate the Milford Centennial. It was the biggest celebration Milford has ever had. She later served on the Beaver County committee to observe the Nation's Bicentennial in 1976. In 1996 she served as Milford's chairman of the State's Sesquicentennial and was the first president of the Milford Historical Society. She was a contributing editor for the book "The Appointed Place, a history of the LDS Church in Milford and also "A Personal View of the History of Milford up to 1914, the town that could." She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers; serving a mission to Cove Fort was an experience she thoroughly enjoyed.
Gladys was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many callings, and leadership positions. Because of her love for family history her family has been blessed with all the work she has done. She had a desire to help those in need, she made and donated over 100 quilts for humanitarian needs and countless care packages. All of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have been blessed by her beautiful quilts.
Gladys is survived by her children, Brad (Shirley) Whittaker of Orem; Judy (Ron) Bailey of St. George; Gary (Deb) Whittaker of Enoch; Larry (Adrianne) Whittaker and Karen (Mark) Nelson both of Milford. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Darlene Miller of Brigham City and Janet Nay of St. George. Gladys is preceded in death by her husband, Bud, grandson Michael, three brothers, Harry, Art, and Deward and three sisters, Della, Una and Donna.
Gladys was loved by all and her legacy of thoughtfulness, kindness, and her love for the Savior, Jesus Christ will influence others for many years. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the love that has been shown to mom and to our family. We sincerely appreciate the care and love that was given mom this last year at the Milford Valley Care Center.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Milford LDS Church (748 West 600 South). There will be a viewing on Monday, April 7, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Southern Utah Mortuary in Milford (209 S. 100 W.). Also a viewing will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the LDS Church. Interment will be in the Milford City Cemetery, under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
