Doris was born on July 28, 1930 in Staatsburg, NY. She was the daughter of the late Leonard and Helen Stickle Day, also of Staatsburg.
Doris, commonly referred to as "Nanny", from all family and friends, worked at the Astor Home for Children for over 20 years, retiring in 2006. She also dedicated 25 years to the Staatsburg Rescue Squad.
Doris leaves behind her three children; son, John "Will" Swenson and wife, Ann, of Hyde Park; daughter, Susan Marie Swenson of Gales Ferry, CT.; son, Mark Swenson and wife, Cheryl, of Hyde Park. Nanny is also survived by her grandchildren, William Ellis and wife, Carla, Sean Ellis and wife, Emily, Mark Swenson and wife Devon, Jennifer Swenson, and Austin and Brandon Swenson. She was also survived by her two great-grandchildren, Oliver Ellis and Theodore Swenson.
Nanny enjoyed being outside in the warm sun, and talking to all family and friends who would come to visit. All the grandchildren can remember playing cards with Nanny and board games, especially UNO; and she never let us win. Also, every Christmas she would give all the grandkids a Christmas ornament with our name and year on it.
So many memories will be treasured, but Doris "Nanny" Swenson was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who always made time to talk, and always gave the best advice.
Calling Hours are Friday, April 4, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Funeral Services are 10AM, Saturday, April 5th, at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc.
Burial will follow in the family plot in Pleasant Plains Cemetery.
