John Mercer Ellis was a son of Isaac "Ike" Ellis (c. 1830s-1892) and his wife Sarah L. Starnes (1833-1929, formerly Mrs. Besheers). His maternal grandfather was Sgt. Nicholas Starnes (1756-1835), a Soldier of the Revolution. He had one older half sister, Anna Besheers Townsend, and two or three full siblings, William Ellis, Joanna Ellis and Ida Ellis. There may have been more.

John married Laura Boots (1865-1940) a daughter of William & Mary Boots, of Akron, Ohio.

John apparently lived in Arkansas and Colorado, and died near Holdenville, Oklahoma in 1916. I am afraid I do not know where he is buried.
