There's an excellent biography for James Taylor Adams written as a forward by his son Simpson Randolph Adams in the book,"Family Burying Grounds in Wise County, Virginia." The book was compiled by James Taylor Adams and later published with permission by his son. Below is an excerpt taken from the book.

He was the son of Joseph Adams and Mary Jane (Short) Adams. He was the youngest of two children. He had a sister Celia several years older than him. He was born in Letcher County, Kentucky and lived on Alum Cove, Little Colly and several other small communities.

His children called him "Poppy." Poppy's grandpap was Spencer Adams who was married to Celia (Church) Adams.

He had a dog named Watch who was buried on a hillside above the homestead. From time to time he would say that when he died to just bury him up there with Watch. His wish was granted.

It has been written by others that he was known as a prolific writer, a folklorist and a preserver of Appalachian culture.
