"Green Twp. farmer, 84, dies while working infield Howard R. Bettler died doing what he loved to do. He died at work on the farm at 3831 S. Arlington Road in Green Township where he was born 84 years ago. He was one of the last farmers left in the rapidly developing Green Township area. 'He got up Tuesday, did his chores, went to town, paid a couple of bills,' said John Kleckner, Mr. Bettler 's son-in-law. He was accompanied by his son, Herman, who worked the 240-acre farm with him. After lunch, the two went out to load hay onto a truck, Kleckner said. 'The dog started barking, and a deer was walking across the nearby field, and Herman asked his dad to look,' Kleckner said. When Herman turned around, he saw his father slumping onto the truck. 'You couldn't write a better script for him.' Mr. Bettler's grandfather, Joseph Bettler, began farming in Green Township before the Civil War and moved to the South Arlington farm in 1875 and the family has been there ever since. Mr. Bettler's father, Wilson, was only 7 when the move was made, Kleckner said. 'He loved every minute of life,' Kleckner said. Friends may call from 1 to 3:30 and 7 to 10 p.m. today at the Hecker funeral home in Uniontown, where services will be at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in East Liberty cemetery."
