After the war, William married Catharina "Catharine" Schaefer on 10 May 1849 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a native of Bavaria, Germany. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of at least 13 children.
The family moved to Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois in the late 1850's. William continued to work as a farmer.
Catharine passed away in 1892.
Children from first marriage: 5 daughters, 8 sons.
He then married Anna Missouri "Annie" Davis Noble on 15 Aug 1895 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.
