Thomas was born near Coaticook, Quebec, the son of shoemaker Peter D. Carrow and Margaret Sanville. When he was two, the family moved to Bangor, Maine.

From age 16 Thomas worked for the railroad, first in Maine and then spending most of his career as a railroad conductor both in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

At age 31 he was naturalized in Boston where he later met and married Delina Betters Hunt in 1899.

Delina had six children from her first marriage. Thomas helped educate several of them in private schools in Connecticut. And most of the girls were college graduates.

Sadly Delina passed away in 1908. They had been married nine years.
