Margaret "Jean" Clemons died at home Friday, March 21, 2014. A strong willed, stubborn, feisty woman, her life ended the way she wanted-in her own home surrounded by the things she loved, including her cat, Lily.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be Saturday, March 29 at 11:00am at DeBerry Funeral Home in Denton. Interment will be at a later date at DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her name to the Denton Humane Society, P.O. Box 1972, Denton, TX 76202 or Denton Regional Medical Center, 3535 South Interstate 35, Denton, TX 76210.
She was born April 15, 1927 in Rush County, Indiana to Roy and Bertha Buckner. She was the youngest of five girls. She married Roger W. Clemons on October 5, 1947 in Rushville, Indiana. As the wife of a career Navy Officer she made many lifelong friends from the West to East Coasts of the United States. Family and home was the central focus of her life, regardless of location and number of moves.
Upon her husband's retirement the family settled in Ohio. She was active in Women's Bowling Leagues and Volleyball and was a Brownie leader for many years. She made friends where ever she went.
When the family moved to Denton, she joined the Denton Newcomer's Club and made new lifelong friends. She worked at Voertmans for 15 years. She enjoyed working with all the students who came to the store, many of whom she "adopted" and stayed in touch with after they graduated.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Roger Clemons and sisters Claudine Read of Mexico, IN and Nancy Smith of Connersville, IN.
She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Schutkowski, husband Mike of Willow Park, TX and Donna Lewis of Denton. Three grandchildren: Travis Hancock, wife Michelle of Azle, TX; Jake Lewis of Boston, MA, and Molly Lewis of Grand Junction, CO., and two great grandchildren Lacey Ann and Levi Hancock. She is also survived by two sisters, Virginia Martz of Greenfield, IN and Hazel Slaughter of Indianapolis, IN, brother in law Robert Clemons and wife Jean of Bonita Springs, FL and several nieces and nephews.
She enjoyed life, her family and her friends, and she will be missed deeply by all including her constant feline companion, Lily
