Published in The Palm Beach Post from Mar. 24 to Mar. 25, 2014.∼Derwin "Derby" Brennan of Boynton Beach passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, after a period of declining health. He was 83.
Derby was born Dec. 7, 1930, in Sharon, a son of Albert and Dorothy Godfrey Brennan.
He attended the former Sacred Heart School and was a 1949 graduate of Sharon High School, participating with the Sharon Tigers football program.
During his youth, he was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.
An amateur boxer in his youth, he fought in the Golden Gloves and in the Navy, where he won an Atlantic Submarine Championship. In 1998, he was inducted into the "Legends of Leather" Hall of Fame in Ohio.
He was a former Miami Beach (Fla.) policeman and an attorney negotiator with State Farm Insurance, Miami.
Derby enjoyed tennis, traveling and entertaining friends and family with his exceptional "Irish wit."
Surviving are: his wife, Lois, at home; two daughters, Terry Hargreaves and her husband Jack, Indiatlantic, Fla.; and Dorothy Kerley and her husband Frank, Boca Raton, Fla.; grandchildren, Summer, Frank and Stephen; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Jacqueline Frazer-Donovan, Baltimore; Derethea Hoban, Cranberry Township, Butler County; Gloria Canfield and her husband Fred, Eustis, Fla.; Gail Marzano, Howland Township, Trumbull County; and Marcia Hudspeth, Irmo, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
Derby was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Derwin Jr.; a grandson, John Hargreaves; and three brothers, Albert, Ronald and Frank Brennan.
