Eff Garner Owens was a loving mother who raised seven children. The wife of a farmer, Lawyer Jimmie Owens, she knew hard work. She churned her own butter, stitched quilts, canned vegetables and made homemade jams and jellies. She washed clothes by hand, carried water from the creek uphill for cooking and cleaning until about 1935 when two of her sons dug a well. She did a multitude of other chores including picking cotton by hand. She always had a chew of tobacco.

Her children called her "Mama".

She was the third of seven children and the daughter of Joseph Andrew Garner (circa 1865 - 1920) and Catherine Owens (circa 1863 - 1909).
