Della Kirby Shaw Mcquiston Della Mcquiston, 83, of Lynchburg, departed this life Thursday, March 14, 2014, at Runk and Pratt Nursing Home in Forest. She was the late wife of Randolph Shaw and retired Navy Captain Lionel Mcquiston. Born in Bedford County on January 16, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Claytor Kirby and Avie Angel Kirby. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Kirby and Jack Kirby. Della worked in the clothing manufacturing business for many years, both as a manager and a costing analyzer. She loved her work but retired when her first husband Randolph Shaw was diagnosed with cancer. A few years after Randy's passing she married Lionel Mcquiston. When he passed in 2001 she continued her devotion to serving her family and showing kindness to everyone she met. The saying "never met a stranger" applied to her and if you were in her sights it was likely you would get a hug or at least one of her award winning smiles. In addition to serving her friends, family and strangers, Della was known as a " prayer warrior " and was most often seen with her Bible in her lap or close by. Many recognized the results of her constant prayers and referred to it as a gift. She never saw it that way. She just enjoyed talking to God and simply believed that in His own way and own time He would work things out. In 2003 she began showing signs of dementia. Her son Michael moved from Michigan to Lynchburg to assist his mother as she had assisted so many others over the years. Michael introduced her to many new experiences including sporting events and she eventually became an avid fan of Liberty's woman's basketball team. She enjoyed the special times at the Vine's center envying the athleticism of the young players. As her dementia progressed so did her other health challenges. In 2011 Michael made the decision to seek special care in assisted living. She was mad as a hornet but adjusted over time and made sure Michael knew he was in her perpetual dog house. Her grandson Scott could do no wrong and got the laughter and affection Michael thought he deserved. As time passed Michael was released from the dog house to share much love, joy and laughter. Della is survived by her son, Michael Shaw of Lynchburg; three grandsons, Scott Shaw of Lynchburg, Chris Shaw (Tracy) of Camden, Mich., Neil Shaw (Shelly) of Onsted , Mich.; and six great-grandchildren, Kevin, Emily, Heather, Dawson , Nick and Valyn, all of Mich. The family would like to acknowledge the loving care given to Della by The Oaks of Lynchburg, Runk and Pratt, Forest , Seven Hills Hospice, Dr. Gezen and Dr. Pamela Caulkins. The family would also like to thank mom's best friend who was with her over the years through thick and thin, Corena Ware. A celebration of Della's life will be held this summer. Memorial contributions should be submitted to the charity of your choice. Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory, (434) 239-2405 is assisting the family.
