He was a member of the Bunker Hill Post 26, American Legion. He served in the Army during WWI, joining shortly after the U.S. entered the war. He was attached to Battery B of the 55th Field Artillery. He spent considerable time with the "Long Rifles" in France. His death was the result of mustard gas exposure during the war.
His funeral was held at his home of 85 Russell St. in Charlestown. He was buried on the 5th with full military honors. A requiem mass was held at St. Francis de Sales Church in Charlestown on the morning of the 6th.
