He was born in Empire. He attended Dora High School and was a graduate of Auburn University in electrical engineering. He worked for the General Electric Company as an electrical engineer for 58 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Norma House Wood.
He is survived by his daughters, Shirley Deavours and her husband, Jack, and Donna Harris and her husband, Joe, ; sons, Gary Steven Wood and his wife, Nada, and Jack E. Wood Jr. ; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Gavin Tucker, Jason Humphrey, Bill Thrasher, Matt Piper, Joey Wood, Bryan Wood, Rob Wood and Wesley Hopper
