Following service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Mr. Wood worked 11 years doing High Speed Aerodynamic Research at Langley Center, NACA, in Virginia. He then moved to Huntsville, in 1957, where he worked for NASA at MSFC for 24 years. There, he served as Acting Director of the MSFC Propulsion Division, as the First MFSC Chief Engineer of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor and as First MSFC Chief Engineer for the Space Shuttle Propulsion System Integration. After retirement from NASA, Mr. Wood worked nine years for Rockwell Space Systems and afterwards for Boeing North America. Mr. Wood was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1957. Survivors include his wife, Virginia G. Wood of Huntsville; son, Judge Charles David Wood and his wife, Nene, of Atlanta; daughter, Dr. Ellen Wood Lynch and her husband, Dr. Robert E. Lynch, of St. Louis; brother, Jack E. Wood of Birmingham; six grandchildren, Charles Scott Wood, Daniel Glenn Wood, Jessica Lee Wood, Mary Glenn Lynch, Anne Kristin Lynch and John Patrick Lynch.
