He was the son of John and Sarah (Corliss) Witham and may have been born at Glover, VT. As a young child he walked from Canada with his father to Woodbury, to the home of an uncle (David Witham) who kept a tavern known as the "Green Mountain House", and later as the Witham Stand. He enlisted in Co I, 9th VT VOLS on 28 May 1862. He was taken prisoner at Harper's Ferry, VA. His company was exchanged the following spring, then was active around Richmond. He was the last Civil War veteran in Cabot.
He was first married to Emily Brown and they were the parents of one unnamed child. After her death in childbirth he married Florence Ainsworth, with whom he sired eleven children.
